A love-letter to both Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, this is a badass action flick that takes us all the way to Kazakhstan, showing us some of its interesting places and cultures… while throwing plenty of crazy action stunts that would make its two heroes proud. A light-hearted but always entertaining piece, this film should satisfy any Kung Fu fan searching for some fun.

Wer? Wann? Was? Warum? Bei diesem kolumbianischen Edel-Thriller gilt es höllisch aufzupassen, damit einem kein Clue entgeht und man zumindest eine Chance behält, das heimtückische Story-Netz zu durchdringen, das Regisseur Yesid Leone direkt vor unseren Augen spinnt. Glücklicherweise gestaltet er das Geschehen aber derart atemlos und elegant, dass man ohenhin nie in Versuchung gerät, den Blick von der Leinwand abzuwenden. Der zentrale Handlungsort ist ein vollbesetztes exklusives Restaurant in Medellín, die Protagonisten sind ein Dutzend Gäste, die einander nicht kennen – deren Schicksale jedoch auf unterschiedlichste Weise miteinander verbunden sind. Ihr aller Leben wird an diesem Abend eine dramatische Wendung nehmen, die sich durch bedrohliche Textnachrichten von einem unbekannten Absender ankündigt und im Laufe einer einzigen Stunde in einem Kugelhagel eskaliert. Wer hat diese Menschen an diesem Ort weshalb zusammengeführt, wie hängen ihre Hintergründe, ihre Handlungen miteinander zusammen? Und welche Rolle spielt dabei die mysteriöse Geheimorganisation „Die blaue Hand“? In seinem clever konstruierten Puzzlespiel enthüllt Leone Hinweise zeitversetzt, indem er uns die entscheidenden 60 Minuten aus sechs verschiedenen Perspektiven nacheinander präsentiert. Man denke 8 BLICKWINKEL, aber ohne die aalglatte Hollywood-Marinade darüber. Antworten gibt es hier erst ganz zum Schluss. Bis dahin heißt es mitfiebern.

Filled with insane action stunts and plenty of gore moments that will shock its audience in the most unexpected moments, this is a tense action flick with a lot of style.

The film is just as beautiful to look at as it is bloody, and what’s even more important, it’s never predictable. It’s the rare case of action film in which you really don’t know who makes it to the end or not, and that shakes you up whenever you think things are about to calm down. Sure enough, this is the new instant classic that you won’t want to miss.

Hexensabbat im ukrainischen Hinterland! Das Debüt-Feature von Serhii Aloshechkin bringt frischen Wind in ein lange vernachlässigtes Genre, wobei es viel, viel Sex und Sleaze mit jahrhundertealten slawischen Bräuchen und pastellig-bunt pulsierendes Neonlicht mit stimmungsvollen Landschaftsbildern kontrastiert. Seine Antagonistin ist eine ungemein attraktive dunkle Zauberin, die Babys klaut und den Jungmännern im Dorf die Köpfe verdreht. Als die nicht minder attraktive Hanna mit ihrem Lover nach langem Auslandsaufenthalt zum Mittsommernachtsfest in die Heimat zurückkehrt, muss sie bis ums Blut um ihn kämpfen: gegen die extrem widerstands- und wandlungsfähige Hexe genau wie gegen Korruption und behördlichen Machtmissbrauch. Trotz reichlich Lokalkolorit ist Folk-Horror hier nur in Spurenelementen vorhanden, anders als die ebenfalls in Osteuropa und im gleichen Themenumfeld angesiedelten YOU WON’T BE ALONE und NIGHTSIREN ist MORENA zudem nicht unbedingt feministisch geprägt – eher im Gegenteil. Kurz gesagt: die ultimative Party für alle, die ihren Hexenhorror laut, bunt und nackig mögen!

Coming straight from Ukraine, here we have an exploitation film that combines the funniest parts of Midsommar and The Witch with the insanity of From Dusk Till Dawn. „Morena“ follows a young woman whose boyfriend falls prey to a seductive witch as they return to her hometown. As our fearless protagonist tries to fight for her man, she has no idea of what dealing with a witch will mean (nor we do), ultimately entangling her in a gore (and very sexual) nightmare that will have her doing things she never thought.
„Morena“ is many things at once, but never quite you might expect. Even if it starts like a Ukranian version of ‚Midsommar‘, the film soon gets a life of its own and brings twist after twist, making it completely unpredictable, right until it arrives to a hell of a bloody climax. Quite an experience, indeed…

Bakemono follows a variety of guests as they visit a cheap Tokyo Airbnb and get hunted down by a gruesome creature who is only waiting for them to sleep. With a diverse cast that showcases the modern Japan society and a strong love for the genre, filmmaker Doug Roos creates a one-of-a-kind nightmare experience that could be easily described as the love child between H.P. Lovecraft and Junji Ito.
Horror fans will be delightedly grossed to see one of the goriest horror films in recent years – one that, sure enough, will take away the sleep away from them as we see detailed scenes of body mutilation with either knives or creeping tentacles.

„Doug Roos goes for the gonzo and achieves it with Bakemono, a Japanese horror outing that blends surrealism with savagery, and a creature feature with the occult. … The film boasts a sizable cast of characters, none of whom viewers should get too attached to, as the body count is high with this one. The practical effects work is the real star here, with gore galore on full, frequent display. Bakemono became an endurance test of stabbings, slicings, and body parts separated from their owners one way or another, along with a rape scene, all of which I felt became overkill after a while, with the practical effects overshadowing the plot. Gorehounds and viewers who gravitate toward excessive mayhem will want to seek this one out, though.“ – Horror Fuel

Der erste Film lautet Aztech, jahrelang hab ich um den Film gekämpft, endlich hat es geklappt.

Alles Böse kommt von oben: Was wir schon immer geahnt haben, wird in dieser spektakulären Sci-Fi-Anthologie eindrucksvoll bestätigt, denn ein Schauer von über Mexiko niedergehenden Meteoritensplittern leitet hier nichts weniger als das Ende unseres Zeitalters ein. Dabei dienen die außerirdischen Gesteinsbrocken als verbindendes Element von neun Kurzfilmen, die inhaltlich und vor allem stilistisch kaum unterschiedlicher ausfallen könnten: Von Weltall-Eye-Candy auf Hollywood-Niveau in EL CAMINO (dessen Co-Regisseur Jaime Jasso bereits für die VFX in Blockbustern der Sorte STAR WARS und TRANSFORMERS verantwortlich zeichnete) über neonbunte STREET TRASH-Reminiszenzen im herrlich spaßigen, splattrigen DULCE MUERTE von Gigi Saul Guerrero (BINGO HELL und weiterer Blumhouse-Fame) bis hin zu elegischer Apokalypsen-Poesie in Alejandro Molinas EL SEXTO SOL, der ganz nebenbei den aztekischen Schöpfungsmythos erläutert und fortschreibt, bekommt das Publikum einen wilden Querschnitt durchs aktuelle mexikanische Genrekino geboten. Für Sci-Fi ist dieses nicht gerade berühmt, aber nicht nur deshalb hat AZTECH seit seiner Premiere beim Feratum Film Festival 2020 für Furore gesorgt: Bei den „Ariel Awards“, den mexikanischen Oscars, wurde er 2022 für die besten visuellen Effekte ausgezeichnet. Seine Geschichten vom Ende der Menschheit (oder zumindest der Menschlichkeit) beeindrucken mit einzigartigen Bildern und waren hierzulande noch nie auf der Leinwand zu sehen. Besser nicht verpassen: Wer weiß schon, wann die Welt untergeht.

Rarely we have seen explorations of Aztech mythology in films as unique or imaginative as this compilation. Bringing a group of up-and-coming Mexican filmmakers, this film will amaze you, scare you, and even make you laugh as it follows some of the mind-blowing stories. It doesn’t matter if it takes place in the outer space or in the day-to-day life of an ice cream seller whose ice truck has been radiated by a meteor, you’re in for a twisted good time.
